How Can Small Things Make You Happy?
Sometimes all you need is one small thing to turn your day around. To live happily you need to start enjoying little things. Even those that are not directly connected to feeling happy.
Let’s go by an unusual approach and start in the evening.
1. Eat A GOOD slice of pizza and enjoy your favorite show (The Office?)
Yes, yes. Unhealthy food and wasting time is generally not a way to happiness. But it is pleasure and pleasure is part of happiness and vice-versa.
Just do it. For yourself. For pleasure.
2. Take the stairs
Thinking of taking an elevator? Not today.
Walking will increase your heart health and lower your disease risk, it will help you maintain weight (let’s say you are just getting ready for that slice of pizza in the evening) and it will make you happy.
3. Give a compliment
Choose a stranger or a co-worker or a family member. Say something nice.
To ensure the compliment you’re giving is perfect and well-intended, make it personal so the person feels extra special. After all, giving compliments releases oxytocin in your brain, making you feel good too.
4. Favourite song
On your way back home or while doing any other daily task, think about that one song you listened a lot to in the past. It doesn’t even have to be your all-time favorite. It can be just a song that reminds you of someone or something. The more emotions it brings up, the better. Maybe skip sad songs or songs related to your past relationship. Some Queen, Backstreet Boys, ABBA should do the job just fine, if you don’t think of any on your own.
5. Make your bed in the morning
It might be a small accomplishment, but making the bed sets the mood for the whole day. It will provide a small sense of pride and it will be a starting point for your other daily tasks. It helps to reinforce the importance of life’s finer details.
